Dr. Soumitra Puzari, Principal , Jorhat College

Jorhat College (Amalgamated) is one of the foremost seats of higher education in Jorhat with an enduring legacy for it has as its founders some of the luminous minds of Jorhat from the bygone era from the field of academics, law, trade & commerce and civil society. A fascinating fact regarding the birth of Jorhat College (Amal.) is that it was born out of the amalgamation of two institutions founded separately in 1962: Jorhat College established under the leadership of by Shri Dulal Chandra Baruah and New Jorhat College helmed by eminent tea - planter Dr.Nilkamal Bezbaruah. The name of the college – ‘Jorhat College (Amalgamated)’ bears the stamp of this unique legacy. The institution proudly celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2012 and Diamond Jubilee in 2022.

Established with the aim to democratize education by bringing the light of knowledge to students from the rural and fringe areas, Jorhat College (Amal.), over the past six decades, has grown into one of the one of the finest centres of higher education in Jorhat offering UG and PG courses in Humanities along with an array of vocational courses for skilling/upskilling of students to make them self-reliant.

The college has an active IQAC that looks after all academic issues in the college. The IQAC prepares the Academic Calendar at the beginning of the session and oversees the hosting of the different academic events as per the schedule prepared. To bring out the best in the students and inculcate a spirit of camaraderie, the IQAC has established a number of clubs namely, Literary Club, Music Club, Drama Club, Library Club, Nature Club, Photography Club, Bird-watching Club, Dance Club and a few more; each club has a student coordinator who plans and hosts programmes in consultation with the teacher-adviser of the respective club.

The college has a well-stocked reader-friendly library that offers access to books, journals, periodicals, newspapers and e-resources. The library has a well-lighted reading room (“Geetartha Baruah Memorial Reading Room”) named after Late Geetartha Baruah, an alumnus of the college, it also houses an art gallery. The entire college is covered with Wi-Fi network providing fast internet access to teachers, students, library and office staffs. The sincere and friendly staffs of the college office ensure the smooth and timely disposal of all office matters. The college canteen provides healthy and palatable food at a subsidized rate to students; there is a canteen committee that ensures that the food provided by the canteen is hygienic and meets all quality norms.

Having elegantly crossed the milestones of the Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee, the college now aims for an all-round development – in terms of infrastructure, human resource development and research output. It has plans to establish a Skills Development Centre in the near future that will ensure skills training which will nurture a spirit of entrepreneurship among the students in keeping with the spirit of the National Educational Policy (NEP) - 2020.
